If you’ve ever watched TV, you’ve probably seen a doctor or other emergency technetium place the defibrillator pads on someone and shock them back into reality.
External defibrillators come in a carrying case. They have a control box, a battery, electrodes, connectors and cables. The control box holds the battery and the circuits. It holds the power, or energy, until the input buttons tell the device that heart needs a shock. The device actually reads a person’s heartbeat and will determine if it needs a shock.
The electrodes actually carry the energy to the patients’ heart. The energy is passed through the cables to the connectors, which typically come in the form of two hand paddles. To make sure the maximum amount of energy is conducted, the emergency technician will place a gel on the person’s chest. This gel acts as a better conductor than skin. It also protects the person’s skin from being burned by the energy.
What is an Internal Defibrillator?
An internal defibrillator or defibrillator implant, works much the same as an external defibrillator. The major difference is that it’s surgically placed under the person’s heart. When a person has a defibrillator implant, they have a serious heart condition. Doctors recommend these to patients only if they think there is a great risk that the patient will continually experience abnormal heartbeats.
Defibrillator implants have similar components as external defibrillators, they’re just placed inside of the body. Doctors are very careful about making sure that a person’s defibrillator implant is working. After it’s placed in the body, they run several tests to make sure the battery is up to snuff. They also ask the patient to return for a check up about once every three months. These frequent checkups let the doctor keep a close eye on the battery. It is very important to be calm when a relative, friend or person has a heart attack, since you will have to know what to do if something like this happens. The first thing is to call an ambulance immediately. Then, according to experts, check whether the patient is conscious or not and place them flat on their back, kneel beside them and put one hand on their forehead and the other on their chin.
After doing these, tilt back their head. And lift their chin until their teeth almost touch. You will have to look and listen for signs of breathing. Pinch their nose and cover their mouth with yours, if the person is not breathing normally. Give two full breaths. The person’s chest should rise as a consequence.
You may check the person’s pulse by putting your fingers on their neck, next to their Adam’s apple and windpipe, which is the tube through which air passes from mouth to lungs. Put your hands on the centre of the person’s chest at the height of their nipples, if there is no pulse. Then put one hand on top of the other. Push down two inches on their chest 15 times. Continue with the two breaths and 15 pumps until an ambulance arrives.

Recently Newschannel 3 visited Borgess Medical Center’s Heart Failure Clinic where patients learn to live by managing their illness. Irma Pruve comes to the clinic twice a month. She may not have recognized the symptoms, but during a routine check-up, doctors discovered the beginnings of congestive heart failure, her heart wasn’t pumping blood properly. A lot of people when they get the diagnosis of heart failure, it’s just a death sentence, but it doesn’t have to be, said Amy Shaffer, clinical coordinator. It can be like any other chronic illness where you can learn to live with it. That is what Pruve has done with the help of Borgess Medical Center’s congestive heart failure program. I had to decrease my fluid intake, and also my salt intake, said Pruve. Pruve was also put on medication. She monitors herself at home, but is also checked regularly by specialists at Borgess. We’re really teaching them how to manage their own disease process and let their doctor know in time if they start to get into trouble, said Gail Venner, nurse practitioner. They had me weighing myself everyday, said Pruve, I had to check for swelling to see if I was retaining fluids. Managing the disease for Pruve means no salt, no soda, and frequent cardiograph tests.
